Decorating Children’s Rooms

May 7th, 2010

If you’re unhappy with the way your home looks, the best thing you can do is redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this will lead to problem upon problem and is certain to bring you stress when you really don’t need it. However if you work one room at a time, your redecorating project will become that much easier and more manageable.

The next stage is to figure out which room you want to decorated first. It’s not always an easy decision to make, but it must be done nevertheless. How about starting by decorating the kids’ rooms first as this will lead to a general mood of happiness in them and can even help you in the long term too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass the time and also gives you the chance to bond with your children as well. There’s no better way to get closer to your children than by getting down to their level and talking about things that interest them. Decorating their rooms might be the best way to do that.

But where do you begin? If you’ve more than one kid you need to be careful about whose room you’re going to decorate first, as things can get tense. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don’t handle it delicately, so I’ve found that the best way to handle it is to flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out heads or tails.

This method might not be appropriate if you’ve got more than two kids or more than two rooms to decorate, in which case I’d recommend you just get on with it and start all the decorating at once instead of tackling it room by room.

At least it’s not the whole house and this way you promote happier feelings amongst the children with no one feeling that they have been slighted by having their room done last. What tends to happen in most cases when youre decorating the rooms with the kids help though is that more paint and stuff gets everywhere but where it’s intended. But then again that was part of the reason you decided to start by decorating kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas, wasn’t it.

You’ll be all the happier for at least getting started on your decorating project and your kids will be happier for having their rooms redone too, not to mention the sheer fun you’ll be having while you’re busy doing all this. This isn’t of course to say, that decorating kids rooms isn’t hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you’ll probably get a boatload more stress by the time you’ve finished, but at least you’ll have had the satisfaction of getting closer to your kids and seeing their rooms clean for at least one day before they get into them again.

It’s a Sunday morning and you’re sitting there waiting for your coffee machine to stop its cycle, so you can have that vital early morning cup of coffee. Nonchalantly, you glance about your kitchen and notice a spot of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago but you never really took any notice of it before now.

You continue to allow your gaze to wander and your eye catches a patch of mildew growing under the sink, then you notice the ugly brown colour your ceiling has become just above where the cooker stands.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the lone wall-papered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that some kitchen decorating is needed.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get started? Now that you’ve finally noticed all the little bits and pieces of decay that you were quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can’t wait to get started on your little kitchen decorating project.

However, this is decision time. Just how modest do you mean to keep your kitchen decorating plans? Sure enough, it all depends on you and your finances, but if you have the time, energy and money, you’d probably do better, in the long run. to solve all your kitchen decorating problems in one go. That would include stripping off the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs, and maybe even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you’re going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you’ll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to smarten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they’re also probably looking distinctly ratty by now. So go ahead and splurge on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you’re at it you might want to think of investing in a new set of tea towels as well. It doesn’t hurt to go the whole hog when you can.

And when you’ve eventually finished, you will be able to sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You’ll have absolutely no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a far better kitchen than you had ever expected.

Textured paint and also imitation wall coatings have grown to be so much more common recently than at almost every other time in modern record. Stores like to present instructional classes on Do-it-yourself textured ideas for painting, so that the idea will allow them to sell more expensive paints, however the fact remains that it requires a specialist to try and do an whole room properly. I wouldn’t advise undertaking the project on your own.

surface finishes may very well be utilized to produce the optical illusion of everything from plaster or large rock to leather and a number of amazing materials in between. Specialized paint contractors are most effective at utilizing these strategies, and it is essential to be absolutely consistent as the paint is applied all-around a space. Ideas For Painting Indoors

April 24th, 2010

Redecorating or renovating your home is never easy, and it gets much harder and more tedious when you need to paint as well. Slapping on one coat of paint after another can be draining if you’re going it alone and still have the whole house to consider.

And let’s not even start talking about the ceilings! But even if you do stick to the same old staid exterior paint job, it doesn’t need to be the same for the interior – you could always try some wild and wonderful interior painting ideas. If nothing else you’ll be guaranteed a reaction from all who enter your home.

By keeping the exterior painting to the necessary minimum, you can spend more time and more creativity inside. You can let your imagination run riot with all those interior painting ideas you always wanted to implement but never got around to. There’s no time like the present, and be honest, when are you going to get around to painting your house again?

However, don’t be alarmed! When I’m talking about flamboyant interior painting ideas, I’m not saying that you should do something that resembles modern art paintings, no, I’m talking about something more along the lines of a paint job that reflects your personality.

So your interior painting ideas need not be anything bolder than a streak of vibrant colour on one wall, surrounded by soothing colours on the other walls. This works very well in any house and the vibrant colour that you pick out can be either soothing or primal, depending on what you want to show of yourself. You could, of course, always go to extremes and emulsion all the walls a bright vibrant shade or even mix and match different shades on different walls.

If you’re doing this, then you may want to think about the effect you’ll have and whether you can actually live with the colour scheme for very long. Crazy and inspired interior painting ideas are all very well and good, but you should always think about whether you’re going to be able to bear the sight of your newly panted walls or not after a month or so. If you are going to have to repaint everything again, it sort of defeats the purpose.

This doesn’t mean that you should restrain your creativity or stifle your interior painting ideas, all it means is that some of the bolder ideas you have, should perhaps be the subject of a small test-run somewhere else.

Don’t think of painting your house as a chore. If you really want to, you can always think of yourself as Michelangelo or Da Vinci or any one of those great artists and paint a stunning picture on your walls. The only requirement is that you turn your great interior painting ideas into reality and that you have fun while you’re doing it.

South-western Home Decor

April 20th, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you introduce it into your own home? Well, to begin with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its best traits. Southwestern home decor uses colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you can even find great kitchen accessories as well.

If you’re considering bringing southwestern home decor into your residence, first of all, you need to check whether it will fit in with your existing decor or whether it will clash badly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye-catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these lovely pieces, you can do one of two things. First up, you could always just throw out every single piece of unwanted furniture that you have and replace them with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match them carefully with your existing pieces.

Personally speaking, I would rather replace everything I have since there’s some wear, but in reality that’s just not possible. For one thing it would just be way over my budget, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about extravagance. I’ve found out that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

However, I’m also more than little happy that I didn’t give into my first impulse and renovate all in the southwestern home decor style. Granted that it does look really nice, but sometimes I also like the serenity that some of my other pieces of furniture bring to in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the ideal solution and have instead resorted to purchasing one-off pieces that catch my attention and dotting my home with them instead.

And I have to say that its made quite a difference in the look and feel of my whole home. Expensive pieces of the more traditional furniture now sit quite comfortably next to the more vibrant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I’ve also bought a great rug for my bathroom floor and a gorgeous set of hand towels. My kitchen sports a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most wonderful lampshade and statuette in prominent view.

Although all of this sounds a bit much, I’ve found that this is the easiest way to bring the splendours of southwestern home decor into your home, without going the whole hog and renewing your entire house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you just want to add a dash of southwestern decor to your home, don’t you? Not the whole thing! Oh, and did I forget to tell you about the gorgeous tapestry I bought the other day? It’s just perfect.

Decorating Ideas for Inside the Home

April 14th, 2010

The bleak winter is getting to you and you’re pfaffing around trying to decide what to do with yourself. You’re snowbound and the only thing that you can think of doing is sitting in front of your fire, drinking hot chocolate and staring broodingly out of the window. The only problem with that is that you’ve already been doing just that for days now and you’ve have had enough of fires, hot chocolate and mooching.

Now you’re itching to do something different, so, you turn to the only comfort you have and switch on the TV. You’re instantly captivated by one of those numerous shows about how you can do up your home. You find yourself inundated with decorating ideas: ideas on both interior decor and exterior decor.

So, you finally find yourself entranced by something that you would have dismissed earlier and jump out of your seat to get a pencil and notebook to jot down all those great ideas. Before long, you’ve run out of room in your notebook and have to leave your comfortable chair to go get another one.

And before you get back to your armchair, you’ve made a quick detour around the house and have spotted many of the things that you’ve spent a lifetime trying to avoid – the cracks in the bedroom walls, the growing patch of mildew in the bathroom, the paint chipping off many of the skirtings.

The list naturally spans more than even your second notebook can hold but you decide to stop there, because it’s giving you writer’s cramp, besides you already have all the pertinent facts to hand, so now you set about sorting them out into sections that you can easily carry out.

Not an easy job that, when your decorating ideas, interior designs and room-by-room list of snags is all mixed up in one messy pile. You then turn to the tried and tested, age-old method of sitting on the floor and surrounding yourself with your notes in an attempt at finding some logical order you can follow later.

When you eventually reach that sublime state of order, you lay back with a tired but satisfied smile on your face. The knowledge that you’ll now have enough decorating ideas and interior design plans and less time on your hands during those long hard months of winter, sends a gush of contentment flowing through you. Using Stylish Illumination to Wonderful Effect.

February 15th, 2010

When you are considering the interior design of a dwelling or area, illumination is almost certainly the most significant aspect of the alterations to the interior decoration. After all, it is the aspect that creates the mood of the room. You can create moods from intimacy to bleak clinicism just by the power of your light bulb or rotating a dimmer control.

Still, if you want to be in no doubt that the effect of the illumination is the one you are looking for, it is important that you be familiar with the four main sorts of illumination.

Ambient illumination: This is the general illumination for the whole room. In most rooms it is the average light in the centre of the ceiling be it a fluorescent tube or an incandescent bulb. It is suggested that you make use of one or more dimmers in order to have more flexibility in creating effects for each occasion.

Local lights: These lights are used to enhance or even temporarily take the place of the ambient illumination. Local lights are most commonly standard lamps, table and wall lights and are ordinarily used in order to assist such activities as reading, cooking, and shaving. The intensity of the light is local and it has to be properly worked out so it won?t strain the eyes.

Accent lights Accent lights are sources of light for showing off decorative items, ordinarily placed so as to draw attention to an objet d?art . Quite literally to show it in its best light.

Natural light: This is the one we get free though skylights, windows and doors. This light is controllable for part of the day by shades, curtains, drapes, blinds or awnings, but obviously varies with the time of the day, the season and the weather. Some locations see huge variations in natural light according to the season, eg monsoon, snow, etc.

It is doubtless easiest, if you take a house room by room. Start by thinking about what the room is used for. Retirees will probably want to take advantage of the daytime natural light for hobbies and reading, whereas a working couple with school-age kids, will be more active in the evening, when additional illumination might be more imperative. Write down what you do and where you do it. Do you have a favourite armchair for reading the paper, do you read the paper during daylight hours or after work? Be courageous in your selection of lighting, but also keep in mind that illumination can have a strong influence on our perception of dimensions, making a room look larger or smaller than it is in reality.

There are lots of ways to light a room but they all come from one of two perspectives: the illumination is either functional or artistic. Yes, they are both used to allow you to see more effortlessly, but highlighting the pages of a book or a shaving mirror is not quite the same as using a low light to highlight a statue of the Madonna in an alcove.

In a short synopsis, you could use the few lines below to give you starting thoughts when you are considering changing a room?s lighting:

i] Place a standard lamp behind armchairs: they should be between three and five feet high. ii] Use an accent light to high or even low light a canvas. iii] Use an accent light to emphasize the contours of bookcases. iv] The ambient light ought to be modifiable. v] Use local illumination to swathe the walls with a low light or glow (can be sunk into the floor).

Living Room Decorating Ideas in Black and White

January 1st, 2010

When people start thinking about living room decorating ideas and decorating their home, whether it be one or two rooms or even the entire house, the first thing that usually comes to mind is ‘what colour’. This combination can be added to any room in a home making it a sophisticated space. Black and white are often used in contemporary home decorating and often used to accent other colors in French Country design. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white baseboards is another fantastic idea for decorating a room. Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white makes an ideal backdrop for decorations such as shelving framed in black. A black or white iron bed-frame with a striped black and white blanket or eiderdown on top. The pillow cases could be either all black or all white too and you could add throw cushions or / and a bolster in the opposite colour.

A nice leather black or white armchair in the corner would definitely accent the living room decorating ideas. Then you could have the white walls with a sophisticated piece of artwork, framed in black, hanging on it. That would surely add to the modern feel of your living room decorating ideas. Black furniture against the crisp white walls would look really neat and tidy and you could spruce it all up with accessories like pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the living room decorating ideas need a little more colour to complete the look, perhaps a throw or a cushion in a bold colour like red or gold on the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to highlight the room. There are many ways to decorate a room. However, finding the one that suits you and those who live with you is very important.
